West African Football Union, WAFU Chiefs are set to elect a new president following the suspension of Nigeria’s Amos Adamu by FIFA over corruption charges for which he was found guilty. But Adamu is still pleading innocence.

According to a reliable source at the venue of the CAF Congress in Khartoum, Sudan, the WAFU chiefs are expected to meet today to elect a new boss to run the union’s affairs in line with the three year FIFA suspension slammed on him last November.

President of the Ghana Football Association, GFA Kwesi Nyantakyi who polled 34 votes to get into CAF’s Executive Committee told our source that both CAF and WAFU are set to remove the toga of corruption the continent is being smeared with.

Officials said the replacement of Adamu is believed to the brain child of Cote d’Ivoires Jacques Anouma as a way of dismantling the structure put in place by the former Director General of the National Sports Commission, NSC.

Anouma and Dr Adamu fought a bitter political war in the run-off to the WAFU election about two years ago before the Ivorian eventually pulled out of the race. He was incumbent President.

Nigeria may not be represented at the WAFU meeting as president of the Nigeria Football Association, NFA, Alhaji Aminu Maigari was expected to depart the Sudanese capital last night for home.

Adamu’s suspension by FIFA automatically rules him out of football positions and matters during the period of the suspension.

It would be recalled that CAF president, Alhaji Issa Hayatou said that Adamu’s tenure on the CAF executive committee would expire in 2013 and that somebody can be nominated to serve out his term if he fails in his appeal before CAS.

Meanwhile the CAF boss has called on Football Associations in Africa to respect their various home governments to avoid unnecessary conflicts between them just as he said he regrets the recent bribe scandal that rocked FIFA and consumed four African administrators including Dr. Adamu.
