The Ogoni ethnic group in Rivers State has apologised to Governor Chibuike Amaechi, over the attack in Bori on his convoy, during the Ogoni Day celebration of January 4, 2011.

Similarly, the traditional rulers and leaders of thought from all the kingdoms of Ogoniland, said they had endorsed Amaechi as their sole candidate for the office of Governor of the state in the April, 2011 elections.  But while tendering the apology at a church service in Bori, the traditional headquarters of the Ogoni people, Chairman of Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, King Godwin Gininwa, said the pelting incident was “most regrettable.”

He said there was need to apologise to the Governor because there was compelling need to thank God for prevailing over the situation, recounting the days when Ogoniland was occupied by the military “and our prominent sons, killed.

“We could have returned to those days when the innocent remained in the bush,”he said, warning politicians of the area to desist from politics of bitterness.

Also the Ogoni leaders endorsed as sole candidate the Peoples Democratic Party Rivers South East Senatorial flag bearer, Mr. Magnus Ngei Abe, who until recently was the Secretary to the Rivers State Government.

The people recounted the numerous developmental projects of the state government completed in Ogoniland by Amaechi.

“Your achievements in infrastructural development, especially in education, health and power sectors, as well as roads are unparallel”, and thanked him for his show of love towards Magnus Ngei Abe, a proud son of the kingdom.
