IBADAN — THE Federal Government through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, has directed the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim to investigate the orgy of violence that pervaded the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Oyo State.

The directive was informed by numerous petitions against the alleged partial role of the State Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta.

According to the letter  dated 8th February, 2011, the IGP should “investigate the various allegations against Alhaji Baba Adisa Bolanta, Oyo Commissioner of Police, and Governor Alao-Akala of Oyo State in relation to persistent disobedience of court order(s).”

The union has been enmeshed in crises following the refusal of the state government to recognize the court-reinstated Chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola. The chairman was reinstated by the National Industrial Court last year. The crises got to the climax when the factional chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Salako was murdered some months ago during the conduct of the local government congress of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan.

In a Memorandum by Ibadan Elders’ Forum which was dated September 3, 2010, the forum “wonders why the police Commissioner, Mr. Baba Bolanta, a Federal Law enforcement officer joins hands in frustrating the enforcement of NIC ruling when President Jonathan’s administration’s policy is equity, fairness and rule of law,”.

It further advised that for peace to reign in Ibadanland, the present C P should be re-deployed from the state.

It said with the 2011 elections drawing near and the NURTW members remain unchecked in the state, the situation may be worse when the elections are around with prevailing tenseness.
