BENIN — GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole’s Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Edo State, weekend, captured another seat in the state House of Assembly by defeating the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, in the state  House of Assembly re-run election, for Akoko Edo Constituency 11, of the state.

The PDP had withdrawn from the race 24 hours before the election, citing what it described as its lack of confidence in the 2007 voters’ register.

However, in the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Returning Officer, Mr Oyewole Ademola, the CAN candidate polled 6,929; ANPP 225, while PDP polled 122. This will be the third re-run election that the Oshiomhole-led ACN would be defeating the PDP in the state.

It will be recalled that the Appeal Court sitting in Benin, had nullified the election of the PDP candidate for the seat, Samuel Saiki, after it declared that election was not held in the area in 2007 due to violence.

Vanguard learnt that Saiki was reluctant to participate in the re-run election apparently after he considered the results of the past re-run elections in the state that were won by the ACN.

Only ACN and ANPP agents were found in the polling stations. Some persons suspected to be PDP sympathizers had earlier gone to court to stop the election from taking place.
