The Police Friday in Ilorin  arrested sixteen members of  the National Association of Kwara State Students following a  violent  protest over non payment of  bursary allowances by the state government.

The protest   took off at the Post Office area of the metropolis and  turned violent when the students approached the  Government House on Ahmadu Bello Way.

Some anti-riot policemen were said to have fired several gunshots into the air and tear gas to disperse the students marching toward the  gate of  the Government House

The spokesman of  the Kwara Police Command, Mr  Ezekiel Dabo,  confirmed the arrest to newsmen, saying three police officers were injured in the incident.

He also said  some vehicles were damaged  while some shops were vandalised  by the  students.

Dabo, who  warned that the command would not allow a  breach of  the peace by individuals or groups, urged students to always channel their grievances to the right quarters.

Also commenting on the incident, a student leader,  Musa Is-haq,  said a delay in the payment of the  2009/2010 bursary  allowances would no longer be accepted.

He said that the students were forced to take to the streets after the ultimatum given the state government expired on Thursday.
