Pay TV: DSTV to build local content to rival foreign bouquet

By Princewill Ekwujuru
Multichoice, brand owner of the Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) said it is only interested in building local content that would rival foreign bouquet, even as it intends to grow her business.

In the same vein, the company said that despite the increasing number of pay television stations in the market, it’s not perturbed by challenges posed by other operators.

Speaking, Segun Fayose, Head, Corporate Communication, Multichoice, while addressing a cross section of journalists said the company believes in not only buying the most expensive content, “we actually also believe in building and developing our own content which is also very key for us.”

Fayose said Multichoice will continue to give consumers more on local content, “because a true local content will actually develop the local industry.”

Continuing, he said, “It is only through local content that we can get money to Nigeria. We need local contents like Nollywood, and local content that can grow better than Nollywood.”

He went further to say that the company will not continue to pay through its nose in obtaining the right to a foreign programme like the European Premier League (EPL)

His words: “We in DSTV believe in not only buying the most expensive content, we actually also believe in building and developing our own content which is also very key for us, that’s why the previous year we did not go for the EPL, because we felt it was over priced.

“Going forward, we are not going to be paying through our nose to get a particular content, all we know is that we are doing all that is possible to make our business thrive. As long as we are making effort to make our business thrive, get you the product and the channels and contents that you want, we will also continue to let you get more on local content because a true local content will actually develop the local industry.”

On challenges, he said, the ups and downs in business is there for everybody to grapple with, it’s challenging, but we are going to continue to face the challenges head on.”
