Nigerian telecommunications firm, Globacom Nigeria Limited, has decided to discontinue its legal pursuit to stop the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) from naming MTN as the title sponsor of the country’s topflight.

On Tuesday, lawyer to Globacom filed a motion for discontinuance at the Federal High Court in Lagos before presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Liman.

The notice of discontinuance by Globacom was brought in pursuant to Order 50 Rule 2(1) of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules of 2009.

The suit was filed by Globacom challenging the award of the Premier League title sponsorship to MTN claiming that due process was not followed in the whole exercise.

SuperSport.com learned that Globacom decided to file for discontinuance due to pleas from concerned Nigerians on the country’s Premier League and football.

It was learned that the withdrawal was also necessitated by the hardship that the suit has caused some postponement in Premier League.

Globacom in the withdrawn suit joined the NPL, MTN, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) as defendants.
