Oyo: Absence of PDP leaders stall guber primaries

By Ola Ajayi
THE absence of the representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party at the governorship primaries of the party in Oyo State has led to the postponement of the exercise. The primaries was to hold Sunday at the Liberty Stadium.

The postponement of the primaries came as Alhaji Yekini Adeojo, Elder Wole Oyelese and Alao-Akala’s, former Deputy, Alhaji Hazeeem Gbolarumi, threatened to boycott the exercise.

According to them, the decision to boycott the primaries was reached after considering the illegality that characterized the newly elected State executives.

They threatened to institute a legal action against the party if it went ahead to conduct the primaries having aborted the State congress of the party due to the murder of the former factional leader of the National Union of Raod Transport Workers, Alhaji Lateef Salako.

Gbolarumi said, the fresh congresses ordered by the party’s National Working Committee was suspended following the Ona-Ara Local Government incident where Salako a.k.a. Eleweomo was killed.

He said, “we would go to court if the party goes ahead to ratify a predetermined Congress which would favour Alao-Akala. The congress that produced Dejo Afolabi executive did not have ‘any legal backing because all the people who came to supervise it from Abuja; like the INEC members and representatives of the PDP Headquarters had left before the kangaroo congress was staged by Alao-Akala’s faction’’.

Governor Alao-Akala through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Communication, Prince Dotun Oyelade had initially alerted the party delegates that the primaries would hold yesterday, but it was suddenly put off.

He said, “The last guber primaries in December, 2006 featured four contestants including Governor Akala. At the end, two of them congratulated the winner while the third stormed out of the stadium when it was all too obvious.
