The Federal Government yesterday reversed the date for the resumption of the public and private primary and secondary schools to January 30, 2011.

Announcing the new date in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Peter Obidiegwu said the  schools will now resume a week earlier than the 4th of February as announced previously.

According to the statement “the President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, concerned about the quality of education at all levels, has further reviewed the number of days public and private schools will be closed for the Voters Registration exercise.

“He has directed that schools should now resume on 30th January, 2011 which is a week earlier than the 4th of February as announced previously.

“It would be recalled that as part of preparations for a hitch-free Voter’s Registration exercise, resumption date for public and private schools throughout the Federation was extended to allow INEC the use of their premises as Registration Area Centres (RACs) nationwide.

“However, SS III students who are preparing for their final examinations are not affected by this extension.

“The Federal Government is determined to ensure that this extension does not impact negatively on the school calendar as arrangements would be made to compensate for the time lost.”
