Why CDC endorsed Jonathan – Party chair

By Vincent Ujumadu
AWKA—National Chairman of Congress for Democratic Change, CDC, Chief Edozie Madu, has explained that the reason behind the party’s decision to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan for presidential election was to ensure continuity and strengthen democracy in the country.

Addressing newsmen at Umunze in Orumba South local government area of Anambra State, after the party’s local government congress, Madu said the CDC would begin active campaign for the election of President Jonathan immediately his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, concluded its presidential primaries.

“CDC was the first political party to endorse President Jonathan for this year’s presidential election. We held a convention where we adopted him and he is officially our candidate for the 2011 election.

“We adopted him because we believe in continuity. When the late President Yar’Adua was alive, our party was also the first to adopt him and when he died, we said we were not going to be involved in the zoning argument. What we did was to extend the support to his then vice president.

“Besides, our party is not ready to take part in this year’s president election considering the money required and we have therefore decided to prepare for the presidency in 2015.”

We believe that between this year and 2015 will be an ample time to look for an incorruptible icon that will fly the flag of the party,” the CDC national chairman said.

He explained that because of the growing popularity of CDC, 48 senatorial and 72 House of Representatives aspirants from other political parties had joined CDC, adding that they would join other aspirants in the party to vie for tickets.

According to him, the so-called big parties in Anamabra State are in disarray and in factions.
He noted that many people in those parties had been joining CDC in large numbers, making the party one to beat in this year’s elections.
