LAGOS—POLICE  authorities has described as “political gimmicks” the purported warning text messages from faceless persons that the city of Lagos will soon experience bomb explosions.

The text messages, which were sent to various individuals Monday at about 2.00p.m. read in part: “There is an intelligence report that a bomb will go off soon in Lagos. Please wherever you are, avoid crowded areas. Please inform loved ones. You are warned.”

Most Lagos residents who received the message were reported to have avoided spots like Ojuelegba, Oshodi, Mile 2 and CMS bus stops in the metropolis.

However, the Police, through the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olusola Amore, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, said: “It is just an attempt to cause panic. It is political gimmicks.

“The test message was just sent to cause fear in the minds of the people. I do not need to tell you that the people are already afraid as a result of what is happening. But I can assure you that the Police is on top of the situation.

People should not panic, they should go about their normal business and disregard any of such further text messages.” flatly dismissed the warning as politically motivated, stressing that it was aimed at causing unnecessary panic. He assured that Police had put all necessary measures in place in Lagos to avoid such occurrence.  According to him,
