Eleweomo: Police quiz Sen Folarin

By  Ola Ajayi
IBADAN—THE Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin was yesterday quizzed and and still being held at the  time of this report, over the killing of the ex-Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Oyo State branch, Alhaji Lateef Salako a.k.a Eleweomo last Thursday during the conduct of the Local Government congress of the Peoples Democratic Party.

His residence was also searched for possible  incriminating materials.

Folarin arrived the State Police headquarters at Eleyele, Ibadan around 9.30am in company of notable chieftains of the party.

Those with the embattled senator were Senator Lekan Balogun, Elder Wole Oyelese, Senator Ayo Adeseun, Alhaji Yekini Adeojo, former National Deputy Chairman of the party in the South West, Alhaji Yekini Adeojo, Mr. Sarafa Alli, former Chief of Staff to Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Alhaji Abass Oloko, former member of the state Pilgrims Board (Muslim), seven suspended members of the State House of Assembly and scores of other supporters of the senator.

Eleweomo, who had been having a running battle with the Court-reinstated Chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola a.k.a Tokyo over the control of the union until the killing off the former by yet-to-be identified hoodlums.

Earlier, the four security men attached to the senator had been detained by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta, over the killing of the union leader.

After a closed door meeting with the CP yesterday, Senator Folarin was asked to go to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan to write his statement.

He was also accompanied by the members of his group who are opposed to the second term bid of Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Scores of his admirers who thronged the police headquarters had initially caused a stir on arrival at the police command when they were refused entry into the office of the CP with the senator.

After about three hours meeting with the CP, Senator Lekan Balogun who spoke on behalf of the group, said there was nothing controversial at the meeting.

He said, “Senator Folarin has responded to the police invitation and there was no misunderstanding. We understood ourselves. Now, he has been told to go and make statement at the Iyaganku police station.”

To him, if there had been effective policing in the state, the killing of Eleweomo would not have arisen.
Asked why they all accompanied Senator Folarin to the police headquarters, he said they could not afford to leave him and that they would go anywhere with him.

As at the time of this report, Senator Folarin,  was still with the police at Iyaganku.
Senator Balogun said as a number 7 man in the country, Senator Folarin could not be detained like that because he had not committed any crime and added that the full wrath of the law would only be felt by offenders and Folarin was not one.

The CP avoided the scores of newsmen that were itching to know the detail of interrogation.
They were said to have finished writing the statement and were on their way to the police headquarters when they got another call summoning them back to the SCID, Iyanganku.

Vanguard gathered the senator was to collect his nomination form later this week and that there was game plan to use the case to distract him.
