FIFA president Sepp Blatter raked up more dust in the wake of the controversies that trailed the World Cup bids, when he asked homosexuals not to frolic, while in Qatar for the 2022 tournament.
Blatter who was speaking to the media in South Africa had suggested that homosexuals should not engage in acts that will offend the hosts who are predominantly Moslems and they forbid same sex relationships.
“I would say that they should refrain from sexual activities.
“We are living in a world of freedom and when the World Cup will be in Qatar, this will be in 2022. And you can see in the Middle East the opening of this culture. It is another culture because it is another religion,” said Blatter
Basketball starJohn Amaechi who is an American born of Nigerian parents and a self confessed gay, said that Blatter was showing “ archaic, Neanderthal ignorance towards the world’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and Transgender community.
“The statements and the position adopted by Sepp Blatter and FIFA regarding LGBT fans who would pay the enormous ticket and travel prices to attend the World Cup in 2022 should have been wholly unacceptable a decade ago,” Amaechi said.
He added that Blatter’s comments were more damaging than they may have appeared at face value.
“Blatter’s words aren’t really about sex, as I can’t imagine that many gay football fans would be bold enough to do it in public in Qatar. Rather, what he is really saying is ‘Don’t be camp, don’t hold hands, don’t look into each other’s eyes, don’t book rooms with one bed, don’t have candle_lit dinners in the restaurant…’ and on and on,” he said.
FIFA attracted a barrage of press criticism following its executive committee decision to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively.
