AWKA —  GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State has given reasons for  the delay in the release of results of teachers’ recruitment conducted before the February 6, 2010, governorship election.

Those interviewed have been mounting pressures on government to release the result, especially when many schools in the state were said to be in need of teachers.

But speaking in Onitsha, Obi said he had to cancel the recruitment because those that conducted it did not follow the guidelines stipulated by the state executive council.

According to the governor, the directive is that the recruitment would be based on areas of need and that candidates from those areas of need would be recruited.

He added that the people that carried out the exercise flouted the directive and interviewed mainly their friends and relations.

He said if the result had been released, the posting would still have been lopsided because the new teachers would prefer to be posted to schools in urban areas, to the disadvantage of those in the rural areas.

Citing the riverine community of  Nzam in Ayamelum Local Government Area as an example, the governor said the directive was that those from the area would be recruited to teach  there to avoid teachers posted to such areas perpetually scheming to be posted out.

“Rather than do as directed, those in charge of recruitment recruited those from their towns, their brothers and sisters.

“With this, I had to cancel it for an equitable recruitment, which will soon be concluded,” the governor said.
