Mother, daughter, 3 others killed in Irri violence

WARRI- THE people in  Irri community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State woke up Monday morning to observe the death of five villagers, including a woman and her daughter,  in a renewed violence by armed youths over leadership crisis.

It was gathered that a faction involved in the leadership crisis went on a reprisal attack on Sunday night over the killing of their member sometime ago.

It was gathered that the youths shot throughout  Sunday night, causing a lot of panic in the night and were practically unchallenged by security agents.

The faction loyal to an incarcerated chief went after the opponents, who they suspected masterminded his imprisonment.

Source said about two of the victims were killed in a drinking parlour, along Uzzi Road between 10.00 pm – 11.00 pm, while the others were killed in a spontaneous reaction.

Irate by the alleged killing of the  members of  one of the factions,  suspected community youths, according to sources were said to have mobilized at dawn to neighbouring community, Oleh where they allegedly killed the mother of the suspected mercenaries. They also shot his junior sister on the buttocks.

Several other persons, it was learnt were injured and rushed by nearby hospital. One of those rushed to Oweh Clinic in Oleh was later confirmed dead, yesterday.

Caretaker Committee chairman of the troubled community, Johnmark Odhigbo who accompanied the police to deposit the corpse of the deceased victims, however, confirmed the killing of five persons but declined to give details.

Meanwhile, the community women yesterday in their hundred took to the street protesting the renewed violence.

The women trekked bare footed from Irri to the Isoko South Council secretariat where that were addressed by the chairman of the council, Askia Ogieh.

The council boss appealed to the protesters to remain calm saying government was already handing the matter.

Some of the placard by the protesters read: “Uturu still operating from prison”. “These same persons declare wanted by court and refused to be arrested by the police were the people killing in Irri”.
