Hard time awaits drug cheats, Popoola

By Toyin Adeyemi

Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, has vowed to stamp out the ugly incident of drug use by Nigerian athletes at major international competitions.

NOC Scribe, Tunde Popoola who is still fretting over the disgrace brought to Nigeria during the Commonwealth Games in India where three Nigerians were expelled for using drugs said that hard times await athletes who would want to spike their system with drugs.

“We’re working with relevant bodies like Nigerian Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA and the Nigeria Olympians Association to educate and possibly eradicate the use of drugs by Nigerian athletes. We want to win fairly and besides it is dangerous to the health of the users. But the disgrace it brings to Nigeria is unimaginable”, Popoola himself an ex-international said.

He promised that all athletes would be of good behaviour and would go through the screening of NDLEA before embarking on such international trips”.

“There will be no exemptions. Both foreign-based and home-based athletes will go through such scrutiny before embarking on trips. We are working seriously with these bodies to ensure that Nigeria will win fairly”, he emphasised.

Mr Popoola lamented that the detection of drugs in the system of some of our athletes during international competitions was a huge national embarrassment. We have zero tolerance for drugs in NOC and will do everything possibly to checkmate it”, he vowed..
