LAGOS – The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) as given its support to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rejection of 45 per cent pay rise offered by the Federal Government just as it condemned government’s threat of “no work, no pay.â€
According to ERC in a statement by its national coordinator, Hassan Taiwo Soweto, “we commend ASUU for rejecting the 40 per cent offer of government.
It is unfair for political office holders to allocate over N1.13 trillion to themselves as salaries and allowances (800 per cent increase) while refusing to pay ASUU and other unions adequate wages.
“The amount needed to fund education up to 26 per cent as well as improve workers’ living standard is not much, if government is prudent enough to invest our resources wisely.â€
The non-governmental organisation noted that the threat of “no work, no pay†would not work and urged the lecturers not to be intimidated.
