AWC: It’s Nigeria Vs Cameroun

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will square up against Eastern neighbours, Cameroun at the Sinaba stadium on Thursday in the semi final of the on-going African Women Championship in South Africa.

The Cameroonians overcame a determined Algerian side 2-1 in their last group match played yesterday at the Makhulong Stadium in South Africa to emerge as runners up of group B.

In the other group B match Ghana capped a disappointing tournament with yet another defeat to the defending champions, Equatorial Guinea. The Equatorial Guinea ladies triumphed with an emphatic 3-1 scoreline to set the stage for a titanic battle against hosts, the Banyana Banyana who finished second behind Nigeria in Group A.

Alongside Ghana and Nigeria, Cameroon is one of the three teams to have participated in all the editions of the AWC since its introduction in 1998.

The Lionesses were finalists in 2004 but could not beat Nigeria. Some of those who played the final are still present in the team such as Marlyse Ngo Ndoumbouk and Francoise Bella who have since been playing professional football. There are six foreign-based professionals in the Cameroon squad; two in Europe (France and Germany), two in Asia (Thailand) and two in Africa (Nigeria).
