UMBRELLA body of Christians in Nigeria, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has condemned the recent seizure of deadly weapons, including rocket launchers, at the Apapa ports, saying the share magnitude of the deadly consignment has again exposed the porosity of the nation’s land and sea borders.

Addressing newsmen at the Lagos airport, the national President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor described, as “unfortunate and a great embarrassment” the recent seizure, stressing, “it is unthinkable that a certain group of Nigerians desperate to make money, are still bent on destroying the nation for pecuniary reward.”

The fiery preacher also took a swipe at the seeming unpreparedness of the nation’s security outfits who, he said, had allowed such cargo into the nation’s territorial waters, saying that it took almost three months for the security authorities to discover the deadly contents of the 13 containers that were discharged in July.

He said: “The only reason all these madness thrive in Nigeria is because whenever things like this occur, the real sponsors of the criminal activities are never prosecuted.”
, rather they are often let out of the hook as a result of political patronage.”

”Until we muster enough political will to deal with every form of criminality, we will continue to embarrass ourselves before the international community.”

He also frowned at initial newspaper reports that certain public officers attempted to conceal the information from the press, pointing out that such action was anachronistic to democratic norms and that in civilised countries such officials would have been relieved of their positions.
