ABUJA—AHEAD of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, primaries for the 2011 general elections, some governorship aspirants on the platform of the party in Bayelsa State, have alleged threats to their lives.

Against this backdrop, the aspirants have petitioned the Inspector General of Police,  Director General of State Security Service, SSS and National Security Adviser, NSA, calling on them to intervene as a matter of urgency.

Speaking to journalists, yesterday, at the PDP national secretariat, when he submitted his nomination forms, a former Bayelsa State chairman of the party and a governorship aspirant, Mr Fred Agbedi, stressed that as aspirants, they were facing serious attacks as well as their supporters at the state level, especially from agents of the state.

Agbedi, who said he was the Bayelsa State Governor in waiting, added that he represents the change the people of Balyesa desired. “We have sent our positions to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of SSS and the National Security Adviser.

There are lots of attacks on our campaign offices, our supporters are not spared.
“There are lots of aggression coming from the agents of the state government.  What do we do? We just have to cry out so that the law enforcement agencies will create a peaceful atmosphere for democracy to thrive in Bayelsa State.”

The former state PDP chairman, who lamented that he was not happy that Sylva’s government he helped to install was derailing alleging that the party was fast losing grip of the state “due to the highhandedness of the Governor.

“I have served as chairman of the PDP in Bayelsa and I felt that the government I brought into office in Bayelsa has lost credibility. The party is fast losing grip of the state and Bayelsa needs a change and I am the change organ that you are seeing today,” he added.
