PORT HAR-COURT— GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State has threatened to drag the Rivers State University of Science and Technology chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to court for embarking on strike over agreement reached with the Federal Government by its national body.

The governor who spoke in Port Harcourt said there was no basis for the university’s chapter of the lecturers’ union to go on strike

According to the governor, the lecturers should know they are employees of the state government and not the Federal Government.

He said the state government would not yield to any agreement that had been reached with lecturers of federal universities and the Federal Government because the state government was not part of the discussion.

The governor explained that lecturers of the State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and the University of Education in Rivers State had a meeting with him where the issues were raised, and he pleaded with them to wait for the Secretary to the Government, who was outside the country, to return to enable them address the issues, but rather they chose to embark on strike.

He said the incessant industrial dispute embarked upon by the University lecturers in Rivers State, some in sympathy with federal workers, was not in the interest of the students. slightest welfare issue, without considering the effect on their students”.

Governor Amaechi said the state government had decided to go to Court to determine if it was proper for the teachers to go on strike when they worked for the state government.
