Ilorin—The National Assembly and state houses of assembly have been urged to enact laws that will ensure maximum sanction for anyone convicted of gender-based violence in the country.

The call was made by the Founder of SAAB Foundation, Miss Saadat Bibire, at the second Edition of the foundation’s campaign walk against rape and gender-based violence held in Ilorin.

Saadat said: “It is a tragedy in Nigeria that up till today, there are still reported cases of violence against women and I strongly believe that this trend is being encouraged because there are no laws to tame it, and there has not been any scapegoat for that matter.”

Bibire also believes that the girl-child should have equal access to qualitative education and life-changing economic opportunities in a healthy and safe environment within a just society.

She added that governments and other non-governmental organisations can also develop strategic partnership with the stakeholders, which will in turn reduce the high rate of unemployment of women in the country.
