Egypt coach Hassan Shehata has revealed he will assess his position at the helm of the national team following the 1-0 defeat to Niger.
The defending champions were stunned by the minnows in Niamey, in their second African Nations Cup qualifier.
The defeat leaves the Pharaohs bottom of Group G, with one point as they were held to a 1-1 draw in Sierra Leone last month.
And Shehata, who was gutted with the shock result said on radio: “Handing in my resignation is unlikely but I will think about my future when I return to Egypt.”I’m yet to decide whether I will stay at Egypt’s helm or not.
“If the current technical staff remain in charge, we will offload many figures.”
Amr Zaki and Ahmed Elmohamady received a pile of criticism from Egypt’s pundits for their poor showing in Niger. But Shehata insisted: “The coaching staff members, including myself, are responsible for the loss. Do not criticise the players.
“I don’t know what happened. The players just ignored the directives and each of them did what he wanted! I told them not to underestimate the underdogs.”But after all we still have a chance to go through.”
