ESUBEB partners ULS in use of Jolly Phonics for teachers

AS part of its commitment to improve reading and writing skills of primary school pupils in government schools across the state, the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, ESUBEB in collaboration with Universal Learning Solutions, ULS, has organised a 3-day training for primary school teachers and dedicated government officials in the state.

Participants drawn from all the local government areas included 500 primary school teachers who were trained in specialist literacy teaching practices, using the Jolly Phonics methodology, a fun and interactive teaching tool that uses the synthetic phonics literacy teaching method. The tool provides children with skills needed to read and write fast.

Speaking on the project in Enugu State which is now in the third year, ULS Projects Director, Dr. Louise Gittins, said: “The Enugu State Jolly Phonics project is well embedded in the hearts and minds of Enugu teachers. The project is set to expand to reach more Enugu teachers in2018.”

In her remarks, the Literacy Project Officer, ULS, Ms. Maisie Hunt, said: “We are delighted to be partnering the Enugu SUBEB to train, resource and mentor its teachers in Jolly Phonics.”
