Equities’ value appreciates by N89bn as Nigeria celebrates independence

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) opened for four days as Friday last week was declared Public Holiday to commemorate the Independence, however the value of listed equities’ represented by the market capitalisation  appreciated by N88.58 billion.

In particular, the capitalisation rose by 1.59 per cent to close at N5.648 trillion from N5.559 trillion at which it opened the week.  Another key indicator of the performance indices the all share index appreciated by 1.59 per cent or 361.5 bases points to close at 23,050.59 points from 22,689.09 points at which it opened.

Analyst have attributed the  improvement throughout the last three days of week to buying tendency suppressed by activities of the bear trader.

Meanwhile, 29 stocks appreciated in price during the week, Nigerian Breweries Plc led with a gain of N5.38 to close at N74.58 per share, Oando Plc followed with a gain of N2.95 to close at N59.95 per share and UAC of Nigeria Plc rose by N2.89 to close at N40.32 per share.

Other share price gainers’ include: Cadbury Nigeria Plc N1.38,  PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc N0.98,
Costain West Africa Plc N0.76, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc N0.7, Skye Bank Plc N0.74, United Bank for Africa Plc N0.63, Access Bank Plc N0.60, among others.

On the contrary, Total Nigeria Plc led 48 other stock on the losers’ table, dropping by N11.87 to close at N225.63 per share, 7-Up Bottling Company Plc followed with a loss of N3.89 to close at N36.95 per share and African Petroleum Plc garnered N2.87 to close at N26.66 per share.

Other share price losers include: Ashaka Cement Plc N2.80, Glaxo Smithkline Consumer Nigeria Plc N2.64, Chemical and  Allied Products Plc N1.67, Guinness Nigeria Plc N1.00 , UACN Property Development Company Plc N0.95, Flour Mills Nigeria Plc N0.90, Okomu Oil Palm Plc N0.60, among others.

On the NSE-sectoral index, NSE Insurance dropped the highest by 5.07%, followed by NSE Oil & Gas with a decline of -0.63%. While NSE Banking recorded the highest gain by 2.58%, NSE 30 gained by 2.42% and Food & Beverages moved up by 1.14%.

A turnover of 1.1 billion shares worth N10.5 billion was recorded in 21,572 deals was recorded while trading appreciated by 13.29 per cent in the week under review, in contrast  971 million shares valued at N8.36 billion exchanged last week in 28,629 deals.
The Banking subsector was the most active on the sectorial analysis accounting for 60.91pet cent of the market turnover with 673.5 million shares valued at N5.5 billion in 12,225 deals.  Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc was the most sought after in the sub-sector trading 166.42 million shares valued at N1.19 billion in  283, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc followed with the exchange of 90.80 million shares valued at N1,33 million in 1,885 deals and Zenith Bank Plc recorded 68.51 million shares valued at N801.75 million in 1,617 deals.

The Insurance subsector trailed on the sectorial analysis accounting for nine per cent of the market turnover with100.3 million shares valued at N94.1 million in 923 deal.

Guaranty Trust Assurance Plc led activities in the sub-sector trading 29.47 million shares valued at N42.40 in 91 deals Intercontinental WAPIC Insurance Plc followed with the exchange of 21 million shares valued at N10.53 million in 110 deals and AIICO Insurance Plc recorded 13.39 million shares valued at N7.9 million in 351 deals.
