The Federal Government has given six weeks to the National Committee on Job Creation to submit its report.
The Committee, which was recently inaugurated by the government, is headed by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President and CEO, Dangote Group, and has as members, Ibukun Awosika, Maryam Uwais, Albert Okumagba, Sam Ohuabunwa, Ademola Oyejide, Folusho Phillips, Stella Okoli and Bashir Ibrahim. Others are Omobola Johnson, Bukar Tijani, Ausbeth Ajagu, Tunde Obileye, Ernest Ndukwe, Tonye Cole, Joseph Makoju and Yemisi Ransome Kuti..
The Government charged the committee to examine what other countries (developed, emerging and developing), have done to ensure increased job creation with a view to developing a pool of possible policy interventions and incentives that will create an environment that is conducive for job creation.
They are also to review existing reports on employment generation in Nigeria and outline key findings and recommendations as well as come up with an action plan, encompassing practical and specific interventions for ensuring increased job creation.
Finance Minister and Chairman of the National Economic Management Team, Mr Olusegun Aganga said: “the setting up of the committee became necessary based on the fact that despite the country’s remarkable growth in non-oil GDP in recent years, unemployment rates remain fairly high.
While some sectors such as construction, telecommunications, finance, information technology and services sectors, have experienced substantial growth, other sectors including manufacturing, which have strong potential to generate increased employment, have declined considerably.”
The minister has assured that the findings of the committee will be presented to the Federal Executive Council for immediate consideration and action.
