ABUJA— First Vice President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Abdulahi Bungundu, yesterday told newsmen that the apex labour body failed to act on alleged corruption charges against the present Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, because investigations were on-going, unlike that of his predecessor, Patricia Etteh.

Speaking at a briefing, Bungudu said: “Investigations on the former speaker were already concluded before we reacted but in the case of the present speaker, investigations are still on-going.”

Also, in a speech he delivered on behalf of the NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar at the “Roundtable on Ethical Conduct of Business: The Role of Labour in the Fight Against Corruption,” put together by United Nations Office on Drugs, UNODC, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Inter-Agency Anti-Corruption Task Force, Omar observed that corruption and moral decay were still high.

“An interesting paradox, however, is that everybody, including our political leadership whom the masses unanimously believe is most guilty of the crimes of corruption, talks of corruption with passion and one, therefore, wonders who is corrupt, what is responsible for the high level of corruption and why it is very difficult to effectively fight corruption in our country,” Omar said.
