What I learnt while living with Davido — Mayorkun

By Ayo Onikoyi

Nigerian singer Mayorkun has opened up about his time living and working with Afrobeats star Davido, revealing one of the key lessons he learnt from his former boss during their years together.

Mayorkun made this known while speaking on the CreativiTEA podcast, where he recalled living in the same house with Davido for about two to three years.

According to the singer, their relationship during that period went beyond music, as they shared everyday experiences while also spending considerable time together in the studio.

“We lived with Davido for around two, three years. I mean, we lived in the same house. We sleep and wake up together. We eat the same thing, we work in the studio,” Mayorkun said.

Reflecting on the music they made during that period, Mayorkun said he believed they created some of the best music of that era.

“Personally, I feel like we made the best type of music around that time,” he said.

The singer also revealed what he considered one of Davido’s most important qualities, saying the music star had a way of connecting with pioneers and people shaping new eras.

“What I noticed about David is that there is a way he connects with pioneers of new era. That’s one of the things I learnt from him that made this stuff possible,” he said.

Mayorkun also spoke about the importance of social media to his career, admitting that without the platform, he might not have secured his record deal.

“Given my age and time, if not for social media, I won’t have gotten my deal in the first place,” he said.

Despite acknowledging its importance, the singer said he deliberately limits how much of himself he shares online because excessive exposure can make an artiste appear too familiar to the public.

“When you start oversharing, you start looking like a regular. So when it looks like, ‘Dem don see me finish,’ I step back,” Mayorkun said.

He, however, acknowledged that social media has become almost indispensable for artistes seeking success in the current music industry.

“I wish you can do music and be successful without social media. It’s just impossible in this age,” he said.
