NUC licenses BYU-Pathway as online university

….As Latter Day Saints promise quality education

By Adesina Wahab
The National Universities Commission, NUC, has licensed the Brigham Young University–Pathway Worldwide, an online higher education organization run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, to operate in the country.

Disclosing the good news to members of the church and newsmen in Ikeja, Lagos yesterday,
Brian K. Ashton, the President, BYU-Pathway Worldwide, expressed gladness that the approval was given by the NUC and that it would help many youths to acquire quality education without leaving the shores of the country.

“We are grateful to the NUC for recognizing and approving BYU. We have been on the matter since about six years. We hope to serve the youths and people of Nigeria to acquire university education. We currently run eight courses at Bachelor’s degree level, they gave us approval for six as the other two are approved by other bodies.

“BYU is located in Idaho, United States and with Ensign College, students can get certificated by attending the online courses here in Nigeria,” he stated.

Also speaking in the same vein, a member of the church, Elder Christian Chigbundu, described the development as an opportunity for youths within and outside the church to acquire sound education.

“When we were growing up in the church, such opportunities were not there. This is a great institution that teaches about life and offers education through which you acquire knowledge that makes you grow like our Lord Jesus Christ wants us to grow.

“The fees are affordable. It is about what the church wants to give the world, not about money,” he stated.

Similarly, another member of the church, Elder Victor Ukorebi, opined that the N420,00 fee was to give access to the quality education the university offers to many young Nigerians.

“I can assure you that the quality of education being offered at the university is comparable to anything anyone could get globally.

“It may not be a conventional university, but I know it is of global standards. It is giving Nigerians quality American education without leaving the country,” he stated.
