Foundation decorates five winners of essay competition

The Francis and Fidelia Ibhawoh Foundation successfully concluded its 2026 Annual Essay Competition with a vibrant awards ceremony held over the weekend in Benin City, honouring five exceptional undergraduate students for their outstanding contributions.

The winners comprise: Deborah Nekpenekpen (200 Level, Igbinedion University, Okada), Jennifer Egbuliese (500 Level, Law, University of Benin),  Esobhawan David (400 Level, Medicine, University of Benin), Osakwe Osazee (500 Level, Medicine, University of Benin) and Nosarumen Aibuedefe (600 Level, University of Benin)

Speaking at the event, Gerard Ibhawoh, Chair of the Foundation, congratulated the winners and admonished them to continue striving for excellence. He emphasised the importance of dedication to duty and hard work.

Ibhawoh also explained the rationale behind this year’s competition topic, “AI, Technology and Education for Nigeria’s Digital Future: Exploring Innovation, Development and the Future of Learning in Nigeria.”

“The choice of topic was informed largely by the outcome of the 2025 essay competition, where it was discovered that many students relied on AI to write their essays but struggled to defend their work and ideas during engagement with the screening committee,” he noted.

Also addressing the awardees, Prof. Louis Ibhawoh, a member of the Governing Board, charged them to view the recognition as a stepping stone toward greater heights and the achievement of their academic and professional goals.

Each of the five winners received a scholarship prize of N200,000.00, along with opportunities for mentorship and networking with professionals and leaders in their respective fields.
