Youth-Led Initiative Targets Period Poverty, HPV Defense Across 10 Ibadan Schools

To commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, youth-led non-profit The Girls Pride Initiatives for Sustainable Development in partnership with Girl Effect has officially launched its flagship “Red Flag Campaign.”

Redesigned this year as a direct, school-based outreach model, the initiative is set to impact 10 public and private secondary schools across Ibadan, Oyo State, delivering critical reproductive health education and distributing over 2,000 sanitary pads to adolescent girls.

The “Red Flag Campaign” derives its name from the urgent need to draw attention to adolescent girls’ health issues that are traditionally shrouded in silence. The “red” symbolizes menstruation, while the “flag” serves as a call to action to shatter systemic taboos.

This year, the initiative expands its holistic health approach by partnering with international non-profit Girl Effect and collaborating with the Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board to integrate vital awareness on cervical cancer prevention and administer Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations to eligible girls.

“Our message is simple: every girl deserves confidence, dignity, access to accurate information, and the opportunity to thrive without limitations caused by stigma or lack of support,” said Ayobami Borisade, Executive Director of The Girls Pride Initiatives for Sustainable Development.

“Conversations around girls’ health should be holistic and preventive, not reactive. By bringing HPV vaccination and cervical cancer awareness into the fold, we protect their future wellbeyond their monthly cycles.”

Ayobami noted that the outreach directly confronts pervasive cultural myths encountered in Oyo State, such as the beliefs that menstruation is inherently shameful, that girls must isolate themselves during their periods, or that reproductive health issues must be handled in absolute secrecy.

Through interactive, age-appropriate educational sessions, the Red Flag Campaign replaces fear and misinformation with clinical accuracy and peer-supported confidence.

To tackle period poverty sustainably, Ayobami said that the campaign goes beyond immediate relief by introducing structural support systems:

School Pad Banks: The initiative is actively advocating for school managements to establish emergency “pad banks” so girls never have to miss instructional time due to a lack of sanitary products.

The Cycle of Confidence Guide: Alongside the distribution of 2,000 sanitary pads, the organization is donating copies of its proprietary Cycle of Confidence Menstrual Health & Hygiene Guide, which features step-by-step instructions on how to safely manufacture and manage reusable sanitary pads.

Student Peer Champions: To ensure the campaign’s impact outlasts the awareness day, two student champions from each school will be enrolled in a continuous mentorship and leadership development program to act as peer advocates within their communities.
