As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has been praised for his contributions to legislative reforms and efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
In a statement issued by public affairs commentator Ned Korie, Kalu was described as a key figure in the 10th National Assembly whose legislative initiatives have focused on governance reforms, constitutional amendments and national development.
Korie noted that one of the Deputy Speaker’s notable areas of advocacy has been support for constitutional proposals relating to state policing, which he said is intended to enhance security management and complement existing efforts to address security challenges across the country.
“Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has consistently demonstrated commitment to legislative solutions that seek to strengthen governance and improve security across Nigeria,” Korie said.
According to him, Kalu has used his position in the National Assembly to encourage discussions on constitutional reforms aimed at making governance more responsive to the needs of citizens.
The statement also highlighted Kalu’s role as Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, noting that the committee has continued to consider various proposals designed to improve Nigeria’s constitutional and governance framework.
“His leadership of the constitutional review process has encouraged dialogue and stakeholder engagement on issues considered important to the country’s democratic development,” Korie stated.
He further commended the Deputy Speaker’s contributions to debates and policy discussions in the House of Representatives, describing him as a lawmaker committed to national progress.
“His contributions to legislative deliberations and policy formulation have enriched discussions within the National Assembly and strengthened efforts to deliver meaningful reforms,” he said.
Korie added that Democracy Day provides an opportunity to recognize public officials who continue to promote democratic values and institutional development.
“As Nigeria celebrates June 12, Benjamin Kalu’s commitment to constitutional reform, legislative leadership and national development remains a significant contribution to the country’s democratic journey,” he added.
Democracy Day is observed annually in Nigeria to commemorate the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as a landmark event in the country’s democratic history.
