Stakeholders including academic and non-academic staff, students, and members of the host community of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, have commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, for his achievements within his first 100 days in office.

Many respondents described the Vice Chancellor as a “messiah” who has introduced reforms aimed at repositioning the institution for academic excellence and innovation.

Prof. Nwachukwu, the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university, assumed office on February 11, 2026, and immediately moved to reposition AE-FUNAI as a hub of academic excellence, ethical governance, and innovation-driven growth.

The Head of Public Relations of the university, Mr. Ikechukwu Elom, while briefing journalists on the VC’s 100 days in office, highlighted several reforms and initiatives introduced under his leadership.

He said the Vice-Chancellor set a clear mandate to make AE-FUNAI a centre for scholarship, character development, and impact, anchored on academic excellence, administrative integrity, and student-centred leadership.

Elom noted that during his inauguration, Prof. Nwachukwu emphasized that a university must go beyond certification to become a space for ideas, innovation, and solutions to societal challenges.

According to him, the VC’s maiden retreat themed “A New AE-FUNAI Rising” helped streamline administrative processes, reduce bottlenecks, and decentralize decision-making to faculties and departments.

He added that the administration introduced democratic elections for faculty deans, granted semi-autonomous status to the College of Medical Sciences, and approved that the position of College Provost be filled through elections.

Students have reportedly begun to feel the impact of the reforms, with renovations ongoing in hostels, including the completion of Female Hostel C, while 650 mattresses and 120 fans were distributed to improve welfare.

The university is also advancing digitalisation of its Bursary and Registry departments to simplify admission, registration, clearance, and transcript processes, while reducing delays and eliminating alleged extortion.

Through legislative support, the university secured a 10-year scholarship for 20 indigent students valued at ₦60 million under OPAY Digital Services.

As part of community engagement, AE-FUNAI also awarded scholarships to three senior secondary school students from its host community.

The institution also achieved full accreditation for 10 academic programmes from the National Universities Commission (NUC), including Business Administration, Criminology and Security Studies, and Public Administration.

A new Institute for Future Skills and Innovation has also been launched, with focus on artificial intelligence, data science, and emerging technologies.

The VC has also prioritised staff welfare, including reconstitution of the TETFund committee, appointment of a new desk officer for training and development, and approval of long-pending staff promotions.

He also directed the upgrade of eligible junior staff omitted in previous exercises, a move that has reportedly been welcomed by the NASU executive council.

In infrastructure development, the university has commenced partnerships with firms such as INNOSON Motors and Zobis Wires and Cables to promote research, internships, and technology transfer.

A private developer, AG-Zara, has also been engaged to expand student hostel accommodation.

The campus has also been equipped with about 150 solar-powered street lights from the main gate to key academic areas to improve security and visibility at night.

In addition, the university medical centre has been powered with independent solar energy to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.

Prof. Nwachukwu also approved the payment of death benefits to families of deceased staff, a gesture widely described as compassionate and welfare-driven.

Stakeholders said the reforms have restored confidence in the institution and positioned AE-FUNAI for greater academic and administrative progress.
