UYO—The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Akwa Ibom State Chapter has charged candidates of all registered political parties to focus on issues, policies and development programmes instead of smear campaigns, hate speech and character assassination as campaigns commence ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
The IPAC Chairman, Blessing Umo, gave the charge on behalf of the leadership and members of the council while congratulating all candidates who emerged from their respective party primaries through a statement on Friday in Uyo.
“As campaigns commence and political activities intensify across the state, IPAC strongly advises all candidates and their supporters to resist the temptation of engaging in smear campaigns, character assassination, misinformation, hate speech, and personal attacks against opponents.”
Umo described the successful conclusion of party primaries as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic process, noting that it reflects the vibrancy of the multi-party system and the commitment of political stakeholders to democratic ideals.
He urged candidates to approach the electoral contest with responsibility, patriotism and respect for the will of the people.
“The people of Akwa Ibom State deserve campaigns that are centred on issues, policies, and practical solutions to the challenges facing our society,” Umo stated.
The IPAC chairman warned that elections should be contests of ideas and visions, not platforms for division, hostility, or the denigration of political opponents.
He advised candidates armed with their party manifestos to present transformative ideas, credible programmes and clear development agendas that will inspire confidence among the electorate.
“Political actors must demonstrate maturity and uphold civility in public discourse, recognizing that today’s opponents remain partners in the collective task of nation-building,” he added.
IPAC Chair reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful, credible, transparent and violence-free elections in the state.
Umo called on political parties, candidates, supporters, security agencies, the media and electoral officials to play their respective roles in safeguarding democracy.
He wished all candidates success in their aspirations and a peaceful, fair and democratic electoral process.
