The Vice-President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, has pledged support for speedy passage of the Chartered Governance Institute of Nigeria, CGIN Bill currently before the National Assembly, as well as the ongoing construction of the new National Secretariat of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria, ICSAN in Lagos.
He gave the assurance while receiving a delegation of ICSAN, led by its President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking, Ukpanah briefed the Vice-President on the Institute’s ongoing efforts to deepen corporate governance practice, promote ethical leadership, and strengthen institutional capacity across both the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy.
She drew the attention of the Vice-President to the CGIN bill, which is currently awaiting listing for Second Reading at the National Assembly.
She noted that the proposed legislation would further strengthen governance practice in Nigeria, enhance professionalism within the sector, and align the country with evolving global governance standards.
Briefed on the ongoing construction of the Institute’s National Secretariat in Lagos, Ukpanah appealed for support from the federal government and other stakeholders towards the completion of the landmark project, stressing that the facility would further enhance the Institute’s capacity to contribute to national development through governance advocacy and professional training.
In his remarks, Vice-President Shettima commended ICSAN for its sustained contributions to corporate governance, capacity building, and ethical leadership throughout its 60 year history.
He also expressed appreciation for the Institute’s role in promoting professionalism and institutional integrity within Nigeria’s governance ecosystem.
Shettima acknowledged the critical role of governance in national development and assured the delegation of his support for initiatives aimed at strengthening institutions, improving regulatory frameworks, and promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria.
He assured the delegation that the government would continue to support initiatives capable of strengthening governance structures and fostering sustainable economic growth in the country.
The visit also provided an opportunity for discussions on areas of possible collaboration between ICSAN and government institutions in advancing governance reforms and improving institutional effectiveness nationwide.
