Awolowo Foundation moves to raise new generation of African leaders

The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has unveiled a new initiative aimed at nurturing a generation of ethical and visionary leaders capable of addressing Africa’s growing governance and development challenges.

The Foundation said the Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Future Leaders Fellowship Programme was conceived as a strategic intervention to bridge the gap between the continent’s abundant youthful talent and the leadership capacity required to drive meaningful social transformation.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Foundation said the initiative reflects its determination to move beyond preserving the legacy of late nationalist and statesman, Obafemi Awolowo, towards shaping the future through leadership development.

According to the Foundation, the programme draws inspiration from Awolowo’s enduring commitment to principled governance, social justice and human development, values it believes remain critical to Africa’s progress.

It noted that despite the creativity, innovation and global exposure of many young Africans, the continent continues to grapple with economic uncertainty, weak institutions and deep social inequalities, challenges that demand a new cadre of leaders equipped with both competence and character.

The Foundation argued that what many young people require is not merely opportunity, but structured mentorship, value-based leadership training and a framework that can transform potential into lasting impact.

“The programme aims to build a vibrant pan-African network of future leaders who embody integrity, excellence and service,” the Foundation stated.

It added that the initiative is designed to connect Awolowo’s leadership philosophy with contemporary realities in governance, public service, entrepreneurship and social development.

According to the Foundation, participants will undergo rigorous leadership development, mentorship and practical problem-solving exercises focused on addressing real societal challenges.

The Foundation said a key objective of the programme is to cultivate leaders who see public service as a responsibility rather than a privilege and who are prepared to place the common good above personal interests.

It further expressed optimism that the initiative would create an influential community of emerging leaders across Africa, the Caribbean and the global diaspora whose impact would extend beyond the duration of the programme.

The Fellowship was first announced during the 2026 Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Lecture and is expected to serve as a platform for promoting the values of integrity, discipline, excellence and service that defined Awolowo’s public life.
