While the FIFA World Cup has featured many nations since its inception in 1930, several countries are still waiting to make their debut on football’s biggest stage, despite showing promise in regional competitions.
Here are some of the most notable countries that have never qualified for the World Cup:
Venezuela
Venezuela is the only South American nation that has never played in a World Cup. Despite improvements in recent years and producing talented players, they have struggled in the highly competitive CONMEBOL qualifiers.
Finland
Finland has grown in international football, even qualifying for UEFA Euro 2020. However, they are yet to reach the World Cup, often falling short in European qualifiers.
Luxembourg
Luxembourg has historically been one of Europe’s smaller footballing nations. Though performances have improved, qualification remains a major challenge.
Benin
Benin has had some strong AFCON performances but has never qualified for the World Cup.
Gabon
Gabon, despite producing stars like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has never reached the World Cup finals.
Zambia
Zambia, winners of AFCON 2012, are still chasing their first World Cup appearance.
Vietnam
Vietnam is rapidly improving in Asian football and could be a future World Cup debutant.
