Nigeria’s political and religious leaders on Monday converged on the Abraham Tabernacle, Sagamu, to celebrate former Governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, as he marked his 70th birthday.

Among the dignitaries were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by his wife, Mrs. Bola Obasanjo; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele; and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

In their separate goodwill messages, the leaders described Daniel as a visionary statesman, lauding his contributions to governance, infrastructure development, and national unity.

President Tinubu, in his tribute, commended Daniel’s remarkable achievements in both the private and public sectors.

“I salute Otunba Daniel for his professional exploits, governance strides and political achievements. He accomplished these feats by dint of hard work, tenacity, wisdom and courage,” the President said.

He added that the former governor had “carved a niche for himself” through years of dedicated service and impactful contributions to national development.

Highlighting his entrepreneurial background, Tinubu noted that Daniel founded Kresta Laurel, an electro-mechanical engineering firm, in 1990, which has grown into a leading company in elevator installation and maintenance in Nigeria.

According to him, Daniel successfully translated his private sector acumen into governance following his election as Ogun State governor in 2003.

“Imbued with innovative ideas and driven by the need to leave a lasting legacy, his administration focused on industrialisation, public-private partnerships, education and infrastructure development,” Tinubu stated.

He also recalled Daniel’s role in initiating key projects, including the state’s first agro-allied cargo airport and the establishment of Tai Solarin University of Education.

Reflecting on their political relationship, Tinubu said: “In the build-up to my election as Governor of Lagos State in 1999, Otunba Daniel worked closely with me and others to ensure victory, a successful inauguration and seamless transition.”

The President further praised Daniel’s political resilience, noting his evolution across party lines and his current standing as a frontline leader in the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“As Otunba clocks 70, I thank him on behalf of our teeming party members and the entire nation for his service to Ogun State and Nigeria. I wish him many more years in good health and continued meaningful contributions to our country,” he added.

Similarly, Governor Abiodun described Daniel as a distinguished leader whose life exemplifies service, excellence, and commitment to national development.

“Attaining the age of 70 is a remarkable milestone that calls for reflection on a life marked by impactful service, enterprise, and sustained engagement with society,” he said.

“An engineer by training and a visionary entrepreneur, he has built an outstanding reputation in both the private and public sectors. His ventures have contributed significantly to economic growth and development.

“In public office, particularly as a senator, he has continued to provide purposeful leadership, championing legislation and policies that advance the welfare of his constituents and Nigerians as a whole,” Abiodun added.

In his sermon, Pastor Adeboye described Daniel as a man of integrity and an embodiment of the Yoruba ethos of Omoluabi.

“I have lived in Ogun State since 1983 and have seen many governors, including during the military era. I can say that Otunba Gbenga Daniel has been quite exceptional,” he said.

“He does not play politics with the Church of God or with people. He fulfills his promises. If you are looking for a true Omoluabi, Gbenga Daniel is one—and such people are rare.

“When he invited me to speak at this occasion, I had to adjust my schedule. I respect him deeply. The Redeemed Christian Church of God celebrates him and wishes him a happy 70th birthday.”

Responding, Daniel expressed gratitude to God and appreciation to those who gathered to celebrate with him.

“First, I give thanks to God Almighty. Not everyone we started this journey with is still here today. To see such a large number of people gathered to celebrate us is deeply fulfilling. I feel happy, appreciated, and honoured,” he said.

“I believe I have not served in vain. Today is truly one of the happiest days of my life.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to public service, pledging to continue dedicating his life to the welfare of the people.

“I have stood with the people for over 25 years, and I have seen many grow into influential members of society. I will continue to dedicate the rest of my life to serving them,” he added.

On the state of the nation, Daniel urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, expressing confidence in the country’s leadership.

“We must remain hopeful. We have a good President—he is intelligent and has a clear plan for the country.

“There is a saying that you cannot have a crown without a cross. We may be bearing the cross now, but it will turn into a crown. In time, we will all share in that glory. Nigeria will be great,” he said.

Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Osun Governor,  Ademola Adeleke, former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun; Hon. Ladi Adebutu; immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to the UK, Sarafa Tunji Isola; Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi  Ladoja;Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Adewale Ajayi; Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo.
