The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from a political gathering held in Ibadan, Oyo State, and expressed concern over remarks attributed to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Akinloye Oyeniyi, the party said the meeting did not represent the PDP or the broader opposition, describing it as a separate political initiative.

The party also expressed reservations about references reportedly made to “Operation Wetie,” a term associated with a period of political unrest in Nigeria’s Western Region during the 1960s. It noted that such historical references should be handled with caution, given their sensitivity.

According to the statement, the PDP in the South-West believes political discourse should remain peaceful, issue-based, and focused on democratic values. It emphasized that the region should not be associated with rhetoric that could be interpreted as encouraging tension or conflict.

The party further stated that it would not be part of any political gathering that, in its view, does not align with its principles or objectives. It added that its focus remains on strengthening internal cohesion and providing credible political engagement.

Commenting on attendance at the event, the PDP noted that participation by various political figures reflects individual choices and does not necessarily indicate endorsement by the party as a whole. It also acknowledged the decision of Olusegun Obasanjo not to attend, describing it as a personal decision.

The statement urged political leaders, including Atiku Abubakar and others, to continue to promote responsible leadership and constructive engagement in the political space.

Addressing Governor Makinde, the party called for clarity on his position regarding the summit and reiterated the importance of unity, transparency, and adherence to democratic principles.

The South-West PDP reaffirmed its commitment to credible opposition and constructive participation in Nigeria’s democratic process, while encouraging political actors to prioritise peace, accountability, and public trust.
