A diaspora group, Yoruba One Voice, YOV, has reiterated its call for a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s security architecture to enhance capacity, accountability, and responsiveness especially as security threats have continued to escalate across the country,

The group also stressed the need for a decentralised policing system as part its call for the implementation of true federalism in the country.

In a statement by its general secretary, Prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, YOV, said that the current centralised security framework has proven inadequate in addressing the diverse and localised nature of the security threats affecting the country.

They stated that the decentralisation of the policing system will “empower states and local governments to establish and manage their own police forces tailored to local communities’ needs.

“the move will also strengthen collaboration between security agencies and communities, help to build trust and improve intelligence gathering.” They added.

YOV also advocated for the implementation of true federalism as a matter of urgency, stating that it remained the only system of government that could rescue Nigeria from unprogressiveness.

They stressed that true federalism is essential for Nigeria’s unity and progress, describing it as a system that will respect the autonomy and rights of its diverse ethnic groups.

The statement read “Devolution of powers, equitable resource distribution, constitutional review and human rights protection are some of the basics, which we must do timeously, if Nigeria is to get of the woods,”

The group noted that with devolution of powers, states and local governments will have greater autonomy to manage their affairs, including security, education, and healthcare, among other things.

It also stressed that when equitable resource distribution is in place, it will ensure fair allocation of national resources to promote balanced regional development.

“We call for a constitutional review to strengthen federal structures and guarantee the protection of human rights for all Nigerians. This includes mechanisms for redress in cases of rights violations and ensuring that governance reflects the aspirations of all ethnic groups.

“Effective security reforms and true federalism are essential for national unity and public safety. Empowering local authorities and addressing regional disparities will create a more cohesive society where every citizen feels secure and valued.

“We urge all stakeholders, government at all levels, the civil society, and citizens — to collaborate in implementing the needed reforms for a peaceful and prosperous nation,” the statement added.
