Robomed announced today the successful completion of the first robotic hernia repairs in West Africa’s history. The procedure was performed using the Toumai MT-1000 robotic surgical platform, the only NAFDAC approved robotic surgical system currently available in Nigeria, led by Dr. lyore James, assisted by Dr. Wesley Ekeruo. Both surgeons are Nigerian American, USA-based board certified surgeons.
This procedure marks the expansion of Robomed’s robotic surgery program into general surgery. Since performing the first robotic surgeries in Abuja, Nigeria on November 22, 2025, the Robomed team has completed procedures across urology, gynecology, and now general surgery, each representing a first for the region.
“Today’s procedure demonstrates that Robomed is building a comprehensive robotic surgery program, not just performing isolated cases,” said Professor Obi Ekwenna, CEO and Co-Founder of Robomed. “Our surgical team is proving every day that surgeons operating in West Africa can deliver world class outcomes with world class technology. This is exactly what we set out to do.”
Robomed achieved NAFDAC regulatory approval for the Toumai MT-1000 on December 22, 2025, marking the first robotic surgical platform approval in West Africa. Through Robomed Academy, the company is developing structured training pathways to grow the next generation of robotic surgeons across the continent.
Robomed is a surgical robotics company advancing equitable access to robotic surgery across Africa and the Caribbean.
Founded to deliver world-class surgical care through technological innovation, the company operates the only NAFDAC approved robotic surgical platform in Nigeria and trains surgeons through RoboMed Academy. Robomed’s mission is rooted in the belief that every patient, regardless of geography, deserves access to the safest and most advanced surgical care.
