RESH Foundation offers Free Eye Care, distributes glasses to 216 in Abia communities

RESH Foundation offers Free Eye Care, distributes glasses to 216 in Abia communities

The Rescue and Support the Helpless Foundation has provided free eye screening, treatment, and medicated glasses to 216 residents across communities in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State.

Chairman of the foundation, Chibuzor Chinyere, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on Saturday at his palace in Ikwuorie Ohanku Ndoki.

Chinyere said the initiative was inspired by his observation during a visit to his hometown last December, where he noticed a high number of elderly residents and youths suffering from eye-related challenges.

“When I came home during Christmas, I discovered that many elderly people and young men had eye problems. That prompted me to organise this free screening and treatment to assist them,” he said.

Humanitarian Outreach

The foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has been actively involved in humanitarian activities aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable populations. Chinyere expressed satisfaction at the impact of the outreach, noting that restoring sight remains one of the most meaningful forms of assistance.

“One of the greatest gifts you can give to a person is sight. Without it, daily life becomes extremely difficult. I am happy the foundation has been able to put smiles on many faces,” he added.

Plans for Expanded Medical Outreach

Encouraged by the turnout and impact of the two-day programme, the foundation announced plans to organise another round of free medical services in December. The next outreach, according to Chinyere, will be expanded to include blood sugar testing, diabetes care, and blood pressure screening and treatment.

He also emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing healthcare challenges, noting that government alone cannot meet all the needs of the people.

Commendation for State Government

Chinyere commended the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, for ongoing improvements in healthcare, infrastructure, education, and general welfare across the state.

Beneficiaries Express Gratitude

Beneficiaries of the programme expressed appreciation for the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.

One of them, Nwankwo Chinyere, said he had long struggled with eye problems but could not afford hospital care until the outreach provided free treatment and medication.

Similarly, Solomon Nwachukwu, who had difficulty reading for about five years due to vision issues, said he can now read again after receiving treatment and medicated glasses.

Chief Lewis Okoro and community leader High Chief Adiele Abel also commended the foundation for the initiative, noting that the free services have significantly improved their wellbeing.

The RESH Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to providing relief and support to underserved communities in Nigeria and beyond.
