President of Police Officers’ Wives Association, POWA, Mrs Mutiat Oluwafunmiyo Disu, has assured that the welfare of the police remains the priority of the Inspector- General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu.

Mrs Disu stated this when no fewer than 1,000 police officers in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, benefited from a free eye care outreach organised by POWA, as part of activities marking the 2026 National Police Day.

The initiative, spearheaded by Mrs Mutiat Disu, was held at Eagle Square under the theme ‘Renewed Hope Eye Care Initiative for Police Families.’

In her address, Mrs Disu expressed delight in the project, saying the exercise would go a long way in boosting healthcare, eye sight and boost morale among police officers, and enhance their enthusiasm both at home and in their duty posts.

She said: “The welfare of police personnel and their families remains a top priority, stressing that the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Tinubu.

“I want to thank Mr Hassan Adekoya who contributed to this. It is first of its kind anyway.

“I don’t think there’s anything like this. It’s in line with the Renew Hope Initiative for the Health Care Services for Police Families.

“We have chosen Mr Adekoya Hassan, the SSA to the Lagos state governor. He is magnanimous, hedecided to give us free items.

“A thousand police officers have been given free glasses. We are so grateful and we appreciate this gesture. He did not take it for granted.

“So once again, I would like to say a very big thank you to you.”

According to her, the initiative is designed to promote the wellbeing of police families, noting that a healthy workforce is critical to an effective and efficient police system.

The exercise featured free eye screening and diagnosis, provision of corrective eyeglasses, as well as medical consultations and referrals for participants.

The programme also received support from Mr. Hassan Adekoya, Senior Special Assistant on Transport and Logistics to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who emphasised the importance of healthcare support for security personnel.

Beneficiaries, who turned out in large numbers, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.

One of the officers said: “A lot of us are aware we have eyesight challenges but we keep managing it. Thanks for this initiative has. The free eyeglasses will enable us see properly.”

Another beneficiary noted that the inclusion of blood pressure checks added significant value to the programme.

“As you can see, they also checked our BP. That is a great one. Many of us hardly check it , and that is why people just drop dead without any signs of sickness. For me, it is a double gesture,” he said.
