A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and House of Representatives aspirant for Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, has criticised recent remarks by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga against former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing them as a distraction from governance challenges.
In a statement issued on Thursday from Stockholm, Sweden, Klinsmann said the comments attributed to Onanuga were diversionary, adding that they reflected what he described as an attempt to shift focus from pressing national issues.
According to him, the characterisation of Obi by the presidential spokesman was “baseless” and “insulting to millions of Nigerians” who view the former Anambra State governor as a credible political alternative.
Klinsmann argued that rather than engage in what he termed “petty character assassination,” government officials should focus on addressing economic hardship, insecurity and declining public confidence in governance.
He maintained that political discourse should prioritise issues affecting citizens, including inflation, unemployment and the value of the naira, rather than personal attacks.
The ADC aspirant also called for greater transparency and accountability in governance, urging public officials to respond to concerns raised by citizens.
“Nigerians deserve answers, not insults,” he said, stressing that national conversations should centre on policies and outcomes rather than personalities.
Klinsmann further criticised what he described as policy inconsistencies and economic decisions under the current administration, which he said have contributed to hardship among citizens.
He warned against attempts to undermine opposition voices, noting that such actions could weaken democratic institutions and erode public trust.
Reaffirming his support for Obi, Klinsmann described him as a leader committed to accountability and people-focused governance.
“Peter Obi remains the only credible solution to Nigeria’s multitude of problems. Peter Obi is competent. Peter Obi is consistent,” he said.
He added that Nigeria requires leadership focused on transparency, human capital development and economic productivity.
Klinsmann concluded by urging Nigerians to remain focused on demanding good governance and accountability.
“A new Nigeria is possible,” he said, expressing confidence that informed citizen participation and effective leadership can help address the country’s challenges.
