Ododo’s sports vision yields results as Anyebe charges Kogi United on NPFL promotion

Ododo’s sports vision yields results as Anyebe charges Kogi United on NPFL promotion

The commitment of the Kogi State Government to youth and sports development has begun to translate into tangible results, as Kogi United Football Club opened their 2026 Nationwide League One (NLO) campaign with a commanding 3–0 victory over Fosla FC in Abuja.

The result came just days after the team departed Lokoja amid strong words of encouragement and clear expectations from the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Aridaojo Monday Anyebe, who charged the players not merely to compete, but to secure promotion to the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

Addressing the team before their departure, Anyebe delivered a firm but inspiring message, emphasizing discipline, determination, and responsibility.

“The task before you is clear,” he said. “You are not just going to participate—you are going to compete, to conquer, and to earn promotion. You carry the pride and expectations of Kogi State. Match the government’s commitment with performance on the pitch.”

He reiterated that the administration of Governor Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo remains unwavering in its support for the team, noting that improved welfare, logistics, and structural backing are already being implemented.

The Commissioner disclosed that, beyond the provision of a coaster bus to ease transportation challenges, arrangements were underway to deliver an additional bus to further support the club’s operations. He also encouraged players and officials to communicate openly with the Ministry on matters affecting their comfort and performance.

“This government is investing in you because it believes in your potential. But support must be matched with results. Be worthy ambassadors of His Excellency and of Kogi State,” Anyebe added.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Kogi United FC, Hon. Isah Abdulmalik Dolly, echoed the Commissioner’s confidence, insisting that the club is long overdue for promotion. He urged the players to remain focused and ensure the team rises above past struggles.

Those pre-match messages appeared to have struck the right chord.

At the Area 3 Football Pitch in Abuja, Kogi United delivered a dominant performance against Fosla FC, with forward Adama Isaiah emerging as the star of the day. His clinical finishing produced a hat-trick, opening the scoring in the 25th minute before adding two more goals in the second half to seal a comprehensive victory.

The performance drew praise from spectators, including a prominent security official who commended the team’s style of play, likening it to European standards. In appreciation, he announced a cash donation of N200,000 to the team.

Captain Abdulrasheed and the defensive line also earned recognition for their composure and organization, ensuring the team maintained a clean sheet.

Despite the impressive start, the club’s management has cautioned against complacency. Team Manager Michael Itodo Olachene urged the players to remain grounded and focused on the broader objective.

“This is a good start, but it is only the beginning. The real work lies in maintaining this level of performance consistently,” he said.

Technical Adviser Abubakar Musa expressed confidence in the squad, noting that the current crop of players possesses the quality and mentality required to redefine the club’s trajectory.

“There is a clear hunger in this team to change the narrative. They are ready, and they understand what is at stake,” Musa stated.

Reacting to the victory, Commissioner Anyebe described the result as both encouraging and symbolic of a new direction for sports in the state.

“This is the kind of response we expected. Not just the win, but the attitude, the coordination, and the belief. It reflects a team that understands its mission,” he said.

He took the opportunity to commend Governor Ododo for his strategic investment in youth and sports, noting that the administration’s vision is already yielding visible progress.

“His Excellency’s leadership has brought renewed energy into the sector. From improved welfare to structured support, the impact is clear. Investing in sports is investing in our youth and our future, and today’s result is proof of that commitment.”

The Commissioner, however, maintained a cautious optimism, reminding the players that the journey to promotion remains long.

“Stay disciplined, stay focused, and avoid complacency. This victory is important, but it is only the first step. The goal is promotion, and that requires consistency.”

Kogi United will now turn their attention to their next fixture against A.A FC, scheduled for April 24 at the same venue in Abuja, as they continue their push for elevation to the Nigeria Premier League.

For many supporters back home, the early signs are promising. For the government, it is validation of policy direction. And for the players, it is a reminder that expectations are high—and justified.

The journey has begun, and for Kogi United, it has started exactly as envisioned.
