The National Association of University Students has endorsed Gateway Shield, a community policing and intelligence platform, and urged the Inspector-General of Police to mandate its adoption across all state commands.
In a statement on Saturday, NAUS Deputy National President (National and Campus Affairs), Comr. Dr Meshach Iyanuoluwa Nwankwo, said the platform represents a major step towards strengthening security through technology and citizen participation.
Nwankwo disclosed that the endorsement followed a high-level meeting with the founder of Gateway Shield, Hon. Ayo Ogunlowo, held in Abuja on Friday.
He commended the initiative, describing it as a solution to persistent security challenges and alleged misconduct by some law enforcement officers.
“Gateway Shield does not merely bridge the gap between the police and the community; it eliminates it,” he said.
He added that the platform would enhance protection of lives and property by significantly reducing response time of security operatives, while promoting transparency and accountability.
Currently operational in Ogun State, the platform enables residents to report incidents in real time through digital channels, including web, mobile applications, SMS, and a toll-free line.
Users can upload evidence, send emergency alerts, track safety trends and report anonymously, with all inputs routed to security agencies for prompt action.
NAUS called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, to direct all state commands to adopt the platform as a national tool for crime monitoring and information sharing.
The association said expanding Gateway Shield nationwide had become necessary in view of evolving security threats.
It also disclosed plans to pay a courtesy visit to the IGP and embark on a nationwide sensitisation tour across the six geopolitical zones to drive awareness and adoption.
According to NAUS, the engagement will involve Commissioners of Police, students and youths, with a focus on promoting the platform’s benefits.
The association reiterated its commitment to partnerships aimed at protecting students from harassment and ensuring a safer academic environment.
