The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected a statement attributed to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, which suggested that a significant proportion of university students are involved in internet fraud.

In a statement issued by its Senate President, Usman Adamu Nagwaza, the association described the claim as inaccurate and not reflective of the broader student population in Nigeria.

NANS said it was compelled to respond in order to correct what it viewed as a misrepresentation of Nigerian students, emphasising that the majority are law-abiding and focused on their academic and professional development.

The association expressed concern about the potential impact of such statements on the reputation of students, noting that generalisations could create negative perceptions.

While reaffirming its opposition to financial crimes, NANS called for balanced and evidence-based public commentary on the issue. It also urged institutions responsible for law enforcement to maintain public confidence through careful communication.

The student body further called on the EFCC chairman to clarify or retract the statement, stressing the need for accuracy in public discourse.

“We support efforts to combat financial crimes but reject characterisations that do not reflect the reality of Nigerian students,” the statement said.

NANS reiterated that students across the country remain committed to contributing positively to national development and global progress.
