NANS Convention: Presidential spokesman to vie for National Financial Secretary

By Adesina Wahab
The presidential spokesman of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Mr Alao John, has declared his intention to contest the post of National Financial Secretary of the association during the coming convention of the student body.
Alao based his decision on his performance in the past as a student leader at various levels and capacities.
In a statement he endorsed on Monday, he stated that his background as a financial expert stood him in a good stead to hold the position.
He listed some of the things he intends to do to include: Repositioning NANS financial architecture for transparency and accountability; strengthening institutional credibility through structured financial leadership and driving student empowerment through strategic financial innovation.
He emphasized the importance of competent and visionary financial leadership, a subject that has increasingly come to the forefront of national discourse within the student movement, promising to deliver on his promise.
“The office of the National Financial Secretary remains one of the most critical arms of the Association, responsible not only for financial documentation but for ensuring discipline, transparency, and the strategic utilization of resources.
“Recent developments within the Association have further amplified the call for a financial system that is structured, accountable, and capable of delivering measurable value to Nigerian students. Concerns surrounding the underperformance of financial processes, weak accountability structures, and the limited translation of financial resources into impactful student oriented programmes have made it imperative for a new direction to emerge.”
Widely recognized as a seasoned financial expert with vast experience in student unionism, Alao brings a depth of knowledge and practical exposure that positions him as a strong contender for the office. His journey within the student movement reflects years of consistent engagement, progressive leadership, and an unwavering commitment to institutional growth.
From his early involvement in campus based leadership to his roles within zonal coordination and his current national responsibilities, he has demonstrated a clear understanding of organizational systems, administrative discipline, and effective leadership. His experience has not only exposed him to the operational realities of NANS but has also equipped him with the insight required to drive meaningful reforms within its financial framework.
Stakeholders and observers have noted that his emergence represents more than a political aspiration. It reflects a growing demand for competence driven leadership within the financial arm of the Association. There is a shared expectation that the office must evolve into a system that prioritizes accountability, ensures proper documentation, and operates with a high level of transparency.
Alao’s background in finance places him in a position to introduce reforms that will strengthen internal financial controls, improve reporting mechanisms, and enhance the credibility of financial operations within NANS. His approach is expected to emphasize discipline, proper record keeping, and adherence to financial standards that align with modern organizational practices.
Beyond structural improvements, there is also a clear focus on impact. His vision is centered on ensuring that the financial strength of the Association translates into tangible benefits for students across the country. This includes the attraction of strategic partnerships, facilitation of access to grants, and the development of empowerment driven initiatives that will directly support Nigerian students.
This approach represents a shift from traditional financial management to a more dynamic and result oriented system where financial leadership serves as a tool for student development and economic support.
Across various zones and institutional structures, consultations and engagements have continued to indicate growing confidence
As the Association moves closer to another defining phase in its leadership cycle, the emphasis remains on the selection of individuals whose competence, experience, and vision can drive sustainable progress. The role of the Financial Secretary is central to this process, and the demand for a leader who can bring structure, transparency, and innovation has never been more pronounced.
