Legislative experience matters – Yahaya Bello backs Abejide’s third-term re-election

Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has thrown his weight behind the third-term re-election bid of Leke Abejide, saying legislative experience and continuity are critical for effective representation.

Bello made the call on Sunday at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Centre in Abuja during the dual celebration of the 50th birthday of Deaconess Esther Modupe Abejide and the 20th wedding anniversary of Abejide and his wife.

Speaking at the event, the former governor said his support for Abejide’s return to the House of Representatives was driven by the need to consolidate developmental gains in Yagba Federal Constituency and Kogi State at large.

According to him, the impact of a third-term legislator is significantly greater than that of a first-term lawmaker because of experience, institutional knowledge, and stronger political influence.

Bello explained that the National Assembly functions largely on seniority, relationships, and accumulated expertise, noting that such advantages cannot be immediately acquired by a new entrant.

He said a ranking lawmaker is better positioned to chair strategic committees, influence national policy, attract federal projects, and navigate legislative processes more effectively.

He added that such legislators have built networks across party lines, understand appropriation processes, and command the respect of colleagues, all of which translate into tangible benefits for constituents.

The former governor also used the occasion to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as impactful leadership and progressive economic policies.

Through the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, who was present at the event, Bello conveyed the continued support of the people of Kogi State for Tinubu’s administration.

“Kindly convey to Mr. President our appreciation,” Bello said.

“The Governor and I are aligned, and we are calling on Hon. Leke Abejide and the good people of Yagba Federal Constituency to support this vision. We want him to join our party, the APC, and return to the House of Representatives for a third term.”

He stressed that legislative service is not a “turn-by-turn” affair but one that thrives on continuity and capacity.

Appealing to stakeholders from Mopa-Muro, Bello urged those aspiring to represent the constituency to exercise patience in the overall interest of development.

“I understand the aspirations of our brothers and sisters in Mopa-Muro,” he said.

“It is indeed your turn, but there is wisdom in timing. Allow Abejide to complete a third term and bring greater development to the constituency. After him, the opportunity will come, and it will come stronger.”

Bello described Abejide as a man of integrity, honesty, and dependable character, whose leadership has positively impacted his constituents, while congratulating the celebrants and wishing them continued prosperity.
