The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN) has called on the Federal Government to take decisive action to address insecurity and protect the lives of citizens across the country.
In a statement signed by its National President, Ambrose Obioha, and Secretary General, Olayinka Ojo, the council said the appeal formed part of resolutions reached at its 157th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
The council described the ongoing violence in parts of the country as unacceptable and a serious concern, stressing the need for urgent steps to safeguard lives and property.
It urged Nigerians to promote accountability, uphold justice, defend human dignity, and contribute to building a more equitable society.
“The council challenges all lay faithful to move from knowledge to action, with emphasis on active participation in the political, social, and economic life of the nation, guided by Catholic Social Teaching and Gospel values,” the statement said.
The group called for coordinated efforts from all stakeholders, particularly those responsible for governance and security, to address insecurity with greater commitment and accountability.
It also expressed concern over economic hardship and inequality, noting the impact on vulnerable populations, and encouraged citizens to promote peace, support one another, and stand against injustice.
The council further urged leaders at all levels to prioritise the protection of lives and property, while pursuing policies that promote human dignity and the common good.
It emphasised the need for inclusiveness and fairness, encouraging Nigerians to foster unity across ethnic and religious lines and work collectively towards national progress.
“The council calls for solidarity and mutual support among individuals and communities, regardless of differences, while advocating the changes needed to build a safer, more just, and peaceful society,” the statement added.
